The White House disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on prior threats in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third straight week.

Russell Vought wrote on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s process for terminating staff.

Although Vought provided no details on which departments were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been issued within that agency. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a union for federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

At a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the Republican bill, which was approved in the House on a near party-line vote.
