The UK and US have reached a important commercial pact that will guarantee zero import taxes on British pharmaceutical products being sold in the US market.

Agreement Details of the Accord

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has pledged to increase expenditure on pharmaceuticals through the NHS. This pledge secures that import taxes on these key products will be held at nothing for a period of 36 months.

This agreement is in response to recent threats to dramatically increase import taxes on patented pharmaceutical imports, with figures floated up to double the cost.

"This deal between the Britain reinforces the international landscape for new treatments and brings long-overdue equity to U.S.–U.K. medicine commerce," a statement said.

Economic Importance

Drugs represent one of the the United Kingdom's largest goods shipped to the United States, which is clearly the largest market for leading UK drugmakers.

Statistics reveal that in the year leading up to last September, the UK sold pharmaceutical products valued at £11.1bn to the US. This figure made up nearly one-fifth of all goods exports in that period.

"This guarantee protects employment, increases investment and paves the way for the UK to establish itself as a global hub for life sciences," a government official stated.

Detailed British Pledges

The pact entails several specific pledges from the British government:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will increase the affordability limit at which it judges new treatments to be too expensive by 25%.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a aim to raise total public funding on medicines from 0.3% of GDP to 0.6 percent over the following ten-year period.
  • Refund Ceiling: The percentage pharmaceutical firms must return to the NHS to prevent overspending will be capped at 15%. Previously, rebates topped twenty percent.

Recent Tensions

This agreement takes place against a protracted tension between the sector and the UK government over medicine costs and regulatory access.

This friction were exacerbated by assertions that US customers were paying a premium for the equivalent treatments than people in the other developed nations.

Over the last 18 months, several major drug company projects in the UK have been paused or abandoned, while substantial expansions have been announced toward US facilities.

The Science Minister stated that the NHS needed to invest a greater share on medicines, noting that its expenditure on drugs had decreased as a percentage of its overall budget over the last ten years.
