A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” declared the country's president.
The official announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in public projects. They were executed at an accelerated speed, beating expectations to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party urged an urgent halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic projects.
